Why study Dentistry at the University of Sydney? We ask our students about their experiences studying the Bachelor of Dentistry.

What's your background?
My name is Po and I studied Bachelor of Science from University of Queensland.

Why did you choose the Bachelor of Dentistry Program?
What interested me was the clinical aspect of dentistry. It's a technical profession, with amazing gadgets and tools used in the pursuit of total patient care. Dentistry is a rapidly evolving profession, with new materials, instruments and techniques coming out every year. This fast-paced development and the hands-on approach of dentistry were attractive for me.

The problem solving component was also appealing. For every patient, you have to figure out what's wrong and decide on the best treatment available to suit each individual's needs.

As dentists, we look after the oral health of individual patients over a long period of time. This long-term, personalised health care is one of the great facets of the dental profession.

What's the course like so far - as you expected?
The Dentistry program has been far more demanding than I had expected. Time is a precious commodity, as we have to study both medicine and dentistry at the same time. This vast amount of theory, combined with the clinical work required of us equates to a lot of study time.

Any particular highlights?
Clinical days are the highlights of every week. In these we work with patients on a regular basis, practice in the simulation clinics the various aspects of dentistry and apply the theory learnt during the week to practical use. These clinical days are mentally exhausting, but highly rewarding and enjoyable.

What are your ambitions after you finish your degree?
I'm looking forward to starting my own private practice a few years after graduation, and possibly continuing onto a specialist field.

What would you say to students considering the Bachelor of Dentistry Program?
Dentistry is a demanding but rewarding career choice. As a dentist you will be a highly respected and trusted member of the community. The BDent program is a fantastic course, and I look forward to meeting many of the future and prospective dentists in the years to come.
