Doctor of PhilosophyThe Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is a research degree in which students undertake supervised research to prepare a substantial piece of work representing a significant contribution to a particular field of study. In addition it trains candidates in the general area of research methodology, equipping them with skills which will serve them in any area of research. The culmination of this degree is the production of a thesis. The PhD in the Faculty of Dentistry is aimed at those who intend to pursue academic careers in oral health.
Admission normally requires a master's degree, or a bachelor's degree with first or second class honours from the University of Sydney, or another approved institution.

Master of Dental Science (Oral Medicine and Oral Pathology)The program aims to develop the skills necessary for the non-surgical management of the full range of oral diseases as well as for the care of medically compromised patients in hospital and non-hospital settings.
The program develops skills in the diagnosis and non-surgical treatment of diseases of the oral mucosa and salivary glands, facial pain and oral manifestations of systematic diseases such as HIV. It provides for the oral health care needs of medically compromised patients, including transplant recipients, in close co-operation with the medical and surgical units of Westmead Hospital. Diagnostic oral and general pathology are integral parts of the program.
The program is aimed at local and international dental graduates preparing for a career in clinical oral medicine and oral pathology.
Admission normally requires a Bachelor of Dental Surgery or equivalent plus two years general practice experience. The closing date for applications is 31 March for commencement in the following year.

Graduate Diploma in Clinical Dentistry (Restorative)
Graduate Certificate in Clinical Dentistry (Restorative)The Masters component is completed over three years full-time. Students entering in 2005 have the option of entering and/or exiting with a Graduate Diploma in Clinical Dentistry (Restorative) following completion of two semesters full-time study or the Graduate Certificate in Clinical Dentistry (Restorative) following successful completion of one semester full-time study. Students enrolled prior to 2005 complete the Master of Dental Science (Prosthodontics) as per the old course structure.
Admission normally requires a Bachelor of Dental Surgery or equivalent plus a minimum of two years general practice experience. In addition, candidates are required to attend an interview prior to selection for admission. The closing date for applications is 31 March for commencement in the following year. Applicants have the option of applying for entry at the Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma or Masters level; the level they are admitted at will be at the discretion of the Course Coordinator.
The Masters program requires three years of full-time study. The Graduate Diploma requires one year of full-time study and the Graduate Certificate one semester of full-time study.

The program focuses on the clinical practice of oral implant restoration. The program is aimed at local dental graduates wishing to develop skills in oral implant treatment for general dental practice.
Admission normally requires a Bachelor of Dental Surgery or equivalent, which is registrable for practice with the NSW Dental Board. In addition, applicants must demonstrate interest in and knowledge of oral implants and have experience in dental-alveolar surgery. Applications close in March for commencement in the following year.

Postgraduate Studies in Population Oral HealthCandidates wishing to pursue a program in Population Oral Health begin by completing the Master of Public Health (MPH) or the Master of International Public Health (MIPH) degree through the School of Public Health, Faculty of Medicine (see http://www.health.usyd.edu.au/). Students must include in their degree the following three dental elective units of study: Preventive Dentistry, Dental Health Services, Population Oral Health. Upon successful completion of the MPH or MIPH, students may then be able to proceed to study a research degree that will fulfil the requirement of specialisation by the Dental Board of NSW.
The Faculty is housed within the Sydney Dental Hospital (SDH), Surry Hills and the Westmead Centre for Oral Health (WCOH), Westmead Hospital. These hospitals provide high quality clinical and research facilities and supervision to postgraduate students. These include: a well resourced Institute of Dental Research, Oral Pathology Laboratory, Jaw Function and Orofacial Pain Research Unit, Community Oral Health and Epidemology Unit at WCOH, Biomaterials Laboratory and Orthodontics Research Unit at Sydney Dental Hospital and facilities for clinical research in general and specialist dentistry. In addition these are, specialist clinical departments (oral and maxillofacial surgery, oral medicine and oral pathology, orthodontics, paedodontics, periodontics, prosthedontics and comprehensive dental laboratory services); student computing facilities in SDH and WCOH, and the dentistry library located at SDH, and a library with medical and dental holdings at WCOH.
Research and clinical collaborations exist between disciplines and with other Faculties and hospital departments and institutes. Postgraduate candidates are encouraged to attend local and international research and clinical meetings at present at the Faculty's Annual Research Conference.
WCOH also houses the internationally recognised Jaw Function and Orofacial Pain Research Unit and a well resourced Oral Pathology Laboratory.
FeesDomestic students enrolled in the research degree programs such as the PhD or MDSc are financially covered under the Research Training Scheme (RTS) and are fee and HECS exempt provided these degrees are completed within a prescribed timeframe - eight (8) full-time semesters for a PhD and four (4) full-time semesters for a MDSc, or their part-time equivalents (16 semesters and 8 semesters respectively). Students will be required to pay the University's Student Union Fees upon enrolment.

FEE-HELP is an interest-free loan facility for eligible local students who are enrolled in fee-paying, postgraduate non-research courses. Unlike HECS-HELP liable courses, institutions set the tuition fee for fee-paying postgraduate courses and students are required to pay the full amount. FEE-HELP enables local students enrolled in the Faculty's postgraduate coursework programs to obtain a loan from the Commonwealth Government to pay all or part of their tuition fees.
