John Highfield graduated from University of Sydney with first class honours in 1964 obtained a DDS from the University of Toronto in 1969 and a MSc (Perio), with distinction, from the University of London in 1976.

He is currently in full time specialist periodontal practice in Sydney and teaches part time. He was previously Head of the Discipline of Periodontics at the University of Sydney, a position which he relinquished in 2003. He is a fellow of the International College of Dentists, the Academy of Dentists International and of the Pierre Fauchard Academy.
