Jim Hawkins received both his undergraduate and postgraduate training at the University of Sydney. Since graduating he has taught orthodontics in the Faculty of Dentistry at undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing education levels. He has been active in the Continuing Education Orthodontics Program since 1986 and is currently the course co-ordinator.
In 1999 he was appointed to the position of Adjunct Associate Professor in the Faculty of Dentistry. Other professional activities have included Trustee and Chair of The Australian Society of Orthodontists Foundation for Research and Education, Chair of the Australian Begg Study Group and Chair of the Dental Care Assessment Committee of the Dental Board of NSW. He is a member of the Committee for Continuing Education in Dentistry, and sits on the Finance Sub-Committee.
He maintains a specialist orthodontic practice in Sydney and Orange, and holds Certification from The Australian Orthodontic Board.
