Malcolm holds a conjunct appointment as head of the Oral Surgery Department at the Sydney Dental Hospital. Prior to his current appointment he was the Head of Oral Diagnosis and Radiology discipline at the Faculty of Dentistry, The University of Sydney.

Malcolm is a qualified oral surgeon and has had a life long interest in radiology. In 2001, Malcolm was the visiting Professor in Radiology at the University of Glasgow.
