Peter Cistulli graduated from Medicine at the University of New South Wales in 1986. His clinical training in General, Respiratory, and Sleep Medicine was undertaken at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, and he became a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 1992. He subsequently undertook a research training programme in Sleep-Disordered Breathing under the supervision of Professor Colin Sullivan at the University of Sydney, and was awarded a PhD in 1995. It was during this time that he developed a major interest in the interrelationship between facial and upper airway structure and function and the implications for dental therapies for sleep apnoea.
In 1994 he was appointed to the Department of Respiratory Medicine at St George Hospital, with a conjoint academic appointment at the University of New South Wales. He established the Centre for Sleep Disorders and Respiratory Failure, which developed a national reputation as a clinical and research centre. He has attracted considerable external research funding, including from the National Health and Medical Research Council, to study the therapeutic effects of oral appliances in the treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea. A strong collaboration with the Discipline of Orthodontics at Sydney Dental Hospital evolved during this time.
In 2005 he was appointed Professor of Respiratory Medicine at the University of Sydney and Royal North Shore Hospital. He is director of the Centre for Sleep Health and Research, and maintains an active clinical and research interest in dental aspects of sleep-disordered breathing.
