For orthodontic treatment to be successful at any level, it is essential to have a basic understanding of normal growth and development of the dento-facial complex and to possess the skills to recognise developing malocclusions.
The course is aimed at providing this information so that an improvement in diagnosis can be acquired. The scope of treatment and appliances that could be part of general practice will be included.
The clinical components of the course will be patient assessment and observation. Treatment with selected removable and simple fixed appliances will be demonstrated. With this knowledge, course participants if they so wish, may be able to participate in Orthodontics II which is more clinically based and of longer duration. As a stand alone course, participants will be more able to recognise abnormal occlusions in both the developing and permanent dentitions, with guidelines for treatment options.
Course participants are encouraged to bring records of patients from their own practice for assessment and evaluation.

This course is both clinical and theoretical with chairside sessions, lectures and seminars. The clinical component of the course is designed to provide practical instruction and experience in the placement and adjustment of both fixed and removable appliances. Patients treated in previous courses will be reviewed and their retention program supervised. The management of more severe malocclusions will be discussed during seminars.
There is a requirement that attendants participate in seminars on patient management, theoretical presentations and journal reviews. There is an expectation that participants will prepare themselves for each course session in journal reading and case presentation skills.
It is the intention of the course to present to all participants a broad range of orthodontic problems and their possible management.
This course is designed to allow those who have completed Orthodontics I to further pursue and apply the presented treatment philosophies.
ORTHODONTICS III From February 2010
This course is designed for participants who have completed Orthodontics II, and extends for a further 6 months with the participants attending for a half-day per month.
The course presents an opportunity for participants to complete the active treatment of patients from Orthodontics II, and to review the appropriate retention programs.
Seminars on patient diagnosis and management will be provided on demand.
